Blk3GM's Dale Earnhardt Site

Earnhardt braces for reactions
By BOB POCKRASS, Staff Writer - News Journal Online
June 29, 1999

DAYTONA BEACH - Dale Earnhardt knows that people will look at the Budweiser and Remington Arms logos on the Winston Cup car he owns and question him.

Earnhardt knew that putting the two sponsors' products - beer and guns - together on one car would bring strange looks and probably some criticism.

He even questions himself about having a beer manufacturer sponsor the car driven by his 24-year-old son, Dale Earnhardt Jr.

"I have questioned sometimes having an association with Dale Jr. and Budweiser - but it's there," Earnhardt said. "Beer and alcohol are out there."

While Earnhardt said he hasn't talked with Budweiser about education campaigns yet, he already has filmed 13 infomercials with Remington as part of a personal-services contract.

"I want to help educate people about hunting and firearms and things like that," Earnhardt said.

An avid hunter who also raises animals on his farm, Earnhardt believes that education is the answer to the country's gun problems.

"They're coming at the firearm people because they make the firearms and somebody goes out and kills somebody," Earnhardt said. "What's going to stop them from coming after the beer companies or the car companies? What if it comes down the line where sugar is bad for you? Or beef? Are they going to sue the food industry?"

Remington, which doesn't make handguns, specializes in hunting guns and ammunition.

"The courts and the people in Washington need to get smart enough and start prosecuting people for shooting people," Earnhardt said. "If there is a sick person out there who goes and shoots someone, then he's sick and he doesn't need to be in our society."

Both Remington's and Budweiser's contracts with Dale Earnhardt Inc. run through 2006.
