Hmiel will pull double duty Sunday
May 28, 1999 - By JIM UTTER, The Charlotte Observer

CONCORD, N.C. -- Steve Hmiel, technical director at Dale Earnhardt Inc., will pull double duty Sunday.

Hmiel will work with his usual team, the No. 1 Chevrolets of Steve Park, but DEI added another member with the Winston Cup debut Sunday of Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the Coca-Cola 600.

Park will start fifth Sunday, while Earnhardt Jr. will line up eighth.

``I'll be back and forth Sunday, talking to each team about tire pressures. If your guy's got a problem, we'll help,'' he said. ``We'll talk about fuel strategy, and I'll just bounce back and forth.''

Hmiel worked as interim crew chief for Park at Richmond two weeks ago while his team searched for a permanent replacement. Paul Andrews was hired as Park's crew chief last weekend.

``I didn't want to be crew chief. I felt we went to Richmond and did a nice job, but for DEI to do what it's supposed to do, I need to be doing aerodynamic stuff, building lighter cars,'' Hmiel said. ``We hope to build our own chassis soon.

``I need to help Junior, help Ron Hornaday go (Grand National) racing, seeing where our truck team ends up. I'm more happy for DEI having me as a technical director than as a crew chief for one team.''
