#3 will take final lap at ‘The Rock' Sunday

Blk3GM's Editor Note:  February 25, 2001 - There will NOT be a final lap with the Black 3 GM Goodwrench Monte Carlo at Rockingham. The Family of Dale Earnhardt has requested this not be done.  "It's just to early."

Dale Earnhardt's black No. 3 Chevrolet will make its final lap around the race track before being retired.

According to Earnhardt team sponsor and "Realtree Outdoors'' owner Bill Jordan, the trademark black car driven by "The Intimidator" will make its final appearance at Rockingham, N.C., this weekend. The car will be driven for one final tribute lap around the track prior to Sunday's DuraLube 400.

Earnhardt, 49, who was killed in the last lap of the Daytona 500 last Sunday, was a friend of Jordan. The two appeared frequently on the popular "Realtree Outdoors'' television hunting show.

Jordan, also friends with Earnhardt team owner Richard Childress, said he spent time this week with the Childress family. Jordan spoke with Childress about what might be a fitting tribute in Rockingham this weekend.

"He has decided to have Dale's No. 3 black Chevy make one final lap around the track at Rockingham this weekend,'' said Jordan. "He [Childress] would like to drive the car himself. But if the emotion of driving it becomes too much, he'll have driver Dave Marcis of the Realtree team handle it.''

Marcis, Jordan, Childress and Earnhardt were hunting buddies who met at a hunting camp 13 years ago. Jordan said that's how many of the business associations between them were formed.

On Wednesday night, Jordan and Childress walked into the shop where Earnhardt's cars were built and serviced.

"It was really tough walking into that race shop, knowing that Dale Earnhardt won't ever be driving that black No. 3 Chevy again,'' said Jordan. "His death was a terrible loss for everyone, not just for those of us involved in NASCAR, but also for the hunting community and all of his fans.''

Earnhardt's black car color scheme is to be retired after the tribute lap.

"Sunday will be the last chance for anyone to get to see that Black No. 3 Chevy on a race track,'' said Jordan.
